WHY I'M SO OVER SEEKING THE APPROVAL OF OTHERS

Why has it taken me up to my twentieth year of living to realise that I don't need others approval? For years I sought the approval of others, trying to change myself and alter certain aspects of myself and my personality to please others. Seeking others approval is absurd and I'm so done with it.

When another persons view becomes more important than your own, it’s time to take a step back. Back when I was in high school, when someone didn't like me, I took it extremely personal. To the extent that I would change myself, for instance, how my hair looked, my make-up, my style and even my personality and interests. I was so worried about why a person didn't like me that I thought it was ME who needed to change to please them, this is so not the case. You should never have to change yourself to please another person and to seek their approval. If they don't think that you are worthy of their time, they are definitely not worthy of yours and definitely not worth wasting your time and energy on! Looking back, this led to me feeling pretty unhappy about myself and effected the way I thought about myself. However, a few years on, I am definitely over the idea of needing others approval and taking it personally when someone doesn't like me. If someone doesn't like me, I'm not going to let it dictate my happiness or make me change. If you find yourself seeking the approval of others and it is effecting you, here are five reasons why you should quit seeking the approval of others!

YOU CAN'T CONTROL WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OF YOU

Each and everyone one of us have different perceptions of life and how people should act. We all have our own views of things, I could find a piece of art beautiful, yet another person could think it is a piece of junk. It is exactly the same with others thoughts about you, you can't control the way they see things.

YOU CANNOT BE LIKED BY EVERYONE

It doesn't matter how nice you are or how much effort you put in with people, you simply cannot have everyone like you. There will always be people who will talk about you for whatever reason.

APPROVAL SEEKING IS TIME-CONSUMING

Why waste your time and energy seeking others approval? Spend your time doing what you want to do and seeking your own approval!

YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE, NOT THEM

Live your life the way you want to live it, do what YOU want to do, don't let others who have no control over your life, control you.

THE ONLY APPROVAL YOU NEED IS YOUR OWN

This is so important. If you approve of yourself, others thoughts and things they have to say about you will no longer matter. You realise that them talking about you has nothing to do with how you are but how they think.

Why do you think we are willing to get ourselves down just to please others? I'd love to hear your thoughts and any tips you have for avoiding this!

Lot's of love, Soph x

  5. So much love for this post, girl! I think when you're younger and still in school, it's impossible to not feel like you want to fit in and be liked by others. But as we grow up, we realise how irrelevant others' opinions are - unless it's family or a close friend meaning well, of course. It's so easy to get caught up on what others think of us but the main thing is to just be happy with ourselves and those around us :)

    1. Yes definitely, when you are in school it's much harder, but as soon as you leave school you really do realise a lot! I agree, as long as we are happy with ourselves that is all that matters! xx

  6. I've just found your blog and I already love it! I really relate to this post, when I was younger I used to pretend not to like things because they were seen as "lame" or "not cool" and it really got me down, but since then I've realised that I can like whatever I want and it doesn't matter what people think. I do have my own opinions and they are just as valid as everyone else's. After all, nobody makes the rules as to what you should and shouldn't like. I loved this so much! x

    1. Aww thank you Clare! That means so much! I was the exact same, I wasted so much time doing what others did and thought was 'cool' and not what I actually liked and wanted to do. It makes me so sad to look back and think of all the things I missed out on doing because I wanted to please other people! X

  7. This post makes so much sense to me.
It's like I am reading what I always think about this topic. I see myself in this so much.

Good for you for realizing this hun. It's the most freeing feeling in the world, isn't it?! You are you. If people don't like you, they row their boat away from you. Because you're beautiful just the way you are.

I am going to be sharing this post religiously! Everyone that is going through this, needs to read this and realize that they don't have to change themselves for other to like them.

    1. Oh Victoria, I'm 100% sure you're my soul sista! I feel like we are so like-minded and similar. If only we lived much closer!

It honestly is the best feeling in the world, you feel free and on top of the world!

Thank you so much! I feel like these topics really need to be shared, because I would have LOVED for the younger me to have read something like this, then maybe I wouldn't have wasted so much of my precious time being anyone but myself.
