More than ever, I have felt the need to constantly remind myself that I am good enough, in various aspects of my life. I feel like as I have grown up, I have lost my sense of self and I compare myself to others a lot (which makes me feel even more crappy) and to be candid, I think this is down to my usage of social media. Over the past few years, I have become increasingly active on various social media channels. But I see this as both a good and bad thing. Although I do wonder, does the good outweigh the bad?

I am currently working on my dissertation (eeek!) which is on social media and body image. I have been reading articles and the vast majority have linked social media (such as Instagram) to eating disorders and mental health problems. It got me thinking about how unhealthy social media can be and how consumed I have allowed myself to become. It is very easy to get hooked on the following, the likes, etc. but this can become very dangerous. It is also easy to get hooked on comparing yourself to others, I know I'm guilty of this.

I will not compare myself to strangers on the Internet

Social media is full of individuals from all walks of life, mostly sharing their highlight reel, the good stuff, the stuff that makes you feel as though you need to get your life together. I'm not saying that it is a bad thing as I do it also, what I am trying to say is that it is important to remember that what you are seeing is snippets of their lives, the great snippets. Even if I am having a crap day, I could post an image on Instagram or a share a Tweet, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm having a good day. Someone may seem like the happy go lucky type on social media but this could be a persona that they are hiding behind when really, they are unhappy.

Comparison is the thief of joy

What you must remember is that you are good enough. Do not judge your own self-worth on the snippets of a strangers life. You don't need to be a certain weight, clothing size, have the 'perfect body' (whatever that is?!), have the latest fashion trend, beauty trend, a big following or likes to be 'good enough'. You are fine just the way you are!

A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way.

  1. Such a simple, yet constantly-needed message. It is great to see posts like this reminding us to see the positives in who we are <3

    1. Thank you Alys! We are often our biggest critics - it is often so much easier to hate ourselves than it is to love ourselves <3

  2. Very wise words Sophie. x
